Urban Nexus: Empowering Local Governance in the Western Balkan (URBANEX – WB)
The Urbanex Project aims to strengthen local governance capacities in the Western Balkans and support selected municipalities in their preparation for the URBACT IV call in 2026.
Funded by the Central European Initiative (CEI) and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Italian Republic, the project focuses on fostering regional cooperation, improving policy planning, and enhancing the ability of local and national institutions to engage in European urban development programs.
By the end of the project, UrbaNEX–WB will have achieved tangible improvements in the way Albanian and Serbian municipalities approach urban governance:
- Cities will be equipped with practical skills in sustainable urban planning and project proposal development.
- Ministries and national authorities will have a clearer role in supporting local governments in European programs such as URBACT IV.
- A stronger network of municipalities will emerge, fostering ongoing regional collaboration and shared learning.
- More local governments will be able to successfully access EU funding, ensuring that the project’s impact continues well beyond its completion.
The initiative brings together public institutions and municipalities from Albania and Serbia to promote sustainable urban transformation and inclusive territorial development.
